Our very own Uveka Rangappa is making her film debut this week and we’re so proud of her.

In her illustrious career, she’s shone brightly as a radio presenter, tv news anchor and presenter, but it’s only now that she’s decided to give the silver screen a shot! And by all accounts, her performance in the movie “Greytown Girl” is certainly noteworthy!

Tonight the film premieres in Durban and Rangappa is there to experience the movie alongside the other actors in the film, crew, family and friends. She says, “We learnt a lot making this movie … about ourselves, our pasts, the human spirit and the power of love… it also prepared us for what lay ahead even though we didn’t know it at the time! It wasn’t just a movie, it was a life lesson!”

The movie begins in the 1960s during Apartheid South Africa and unfolds against the backdrop of the nation’s journey toward liberation. As South Africa transitions to democracy, the story of Meena’s self-realization and self-love deepens, intertwining her personal growth with the country’s pivotal changes. This intimate narrative is enriched by the dramatic political transformation that shapes its foundation.

Meena is played by Sanam Sitaram who takes us on a true-to-life journey from her birth with a disability to growing up believing she has been abandoned. Despite this, young Meena bravely builds a life for herself at an orphanage. Only after she learns to walk independently is she able to return to her family home.

It’s here we meet Rangappa’s character, Meena’s mom, alongside Jack Devnarain who plays her husband.

The film Greytown Girl, an inspiring and cinematic true story of love and resilience, is written by Rani Sitaram and co-produced by Sitaram and Asgar Mahomed, with direction by Oscar-nominated Darrell Roodt. It will premiere in all Cinecentre, NuMetro, and Ster Kinekor cinemas this Friday.
