In the early 2000s, as Zimbabwe descended into turmoil, a remarkable story of compassion and resilience emerged. Mandy and Pat Retzlaff, once prosperous landowners, found themselves facing an uncertain future after being forcibly evicted from their farm under orders of president Robert Mugabe’s regime. The couple’s tale, however, took an unexpected turn, leading them to a new beginning in Mozambique.
As Zimbabwe’s land reform program erupted into chaos, thousands of white farmers were displaced, their livelihoods upended overnight. The violent land invasions, fueled by political unrest, left many fleeing with nothing but their lives. Among them were Mandy and Pat Retzlaff, who, despite the danger, chose to go above and beyond for a cause greater than themselves.
In the midst of the violence, Mandy and Pat’s thoughts turned to the animals left behind in the chaos. Determined to rescue over 400 horses from abandoned farms, they embarked on a daring mission. Utilising their own resources and risking their safety, the couple set out to save these animals from certain death. Their efforts to gather and transport the horses were fraught with challenges – bribes, border troubles and the constant threat of violence.
Their heroics did not go unnoticed. Known across Zimbabwe for their tireless work, Mandy and Pat faced numerous hurdles but remained undeterred. They managed to transport 104 horses to Mozambique, where their new home in Vilankulos offered a sanctuary for these rescued animals.
But their story didn’t end there. In Mozambique, Mandy and Pat turned their adversity into opportunity. They established Mozambique Horse Safaris and East Africa Safaris, while their son Jonathan launched Vilankulos Canoe Safaris, capitalising on the region’s natural beauty.
Mandy and Pat’s journey from the ashes of their former life to the vibrant landscapes of Mozambique exemplifies the power of selflessness, courage and resilience. Their story is a testament to the profound impact of following ones heart, proving that even in the darkest of times, hope and new beginnings can emerge.
