Abha International Airport, located in Abha, the capital of Asir Province in Saudi Arabia has recently announced a groundbreaking milestone by becoming the country’s first silent airport. This transformation aims to enhance the overall passenger experience by minimising noise pollution and creating a tranquil atmosphere within the airport premises.

This moves sees the airport eliminating routine public announcements such as boarding calls and last calls for passengers. The initiative aligns with global best practices observed at major international airports including Singapore Changi, Zurich, Amsterdam, and London City which have received positive feedback from travellers. The silent airport concept revolves around reducing or eliminating public address announcements and other forms of audio communication within airport terminals.

Instead of relying on frequent and often loud announcements, information is conveyed through alternative means such as digital displays, mobile notifications, and personal interactions. This approach not only reduces noise levels but also fosters a more serene and stress-free environment for travellers. Abha International Airport has planned the silent airport initiative by ensuring that all necessary measures are in place to maintain efficient communication and passenger flow. Key elements of the implementation include, enhanced digital signage.

The airport has installed state of the art digital displays throughout the terminal. These screens provide real time information on flight schedules, gate changes, boarding times, and other essential updates. The use of high-resolution displays ensures that the information is clear and easily readable. Mobile notifications are also in place whereby passengers are encouraged to download the airport’s official app, which provides timely notifications regarding their flights. This includes alerts for check-in times, boarding gates, and any changes to their itinerary.

The app also offers additional services such as digital boarding passes and way finding assistance. To compensate for the absence of public announcements, the airport has increased the presence of customer service personnel. Staff members are readily available to assist passengers with any queries or concerns, providing a personal touch to the travel experience. The benefits of Abha International moving into a silent airport aim to create an enhanced passenger experience for travellers.

Eliminating frequent announcements, the overall noise levels within the terminal are considerably reduced. This creates a calmer and more pleasant environment, allowing passengers to relax and enjoy their time at the airport. In a quieter setting, passengers can focus more easily on their personal tasks, such as reading, working, or engaging in conversation. This is particularly beneficial for business travellers who need to stay productive while waiting for their flights.

For most travellers airports can be stressful environments due to the hustle and bustle. The silent airport initiative helps to alleviate some of this stress by creating a more tranquil atmosphere, allowing passengers to feel more at ease during their journey. With the airport reducing the need for loudspeakers and frequent announcements, the silent airport initiative contributes to the airport’s sustainability efforts. It aligns with global trends in environmental responsibility, promoting a more sustainable mode of operation.

Abha International Airport’s adoption of the silent airport model positions it at the forefront of passenger experience innovation within the Middle East. This move aligns with Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030, which emphasises enhancing the quality of life and transforming the Kingdom into a leading global hub for tourism and travel. The successful implementation of the silent airport initiative at Abha International Airport sets a precedent for other airports in Saudi Arabia and the wider region.

As more airports adopt this model, the overall passenger experience across the Kingdom is likely to improve, attracting more travellers and boosting the tourism sector. Moreover, the silent airport initiative can serve as a catalyst for further innovations in airport management. This includes the integration of advanced technologies such as artificial intelligence, biometric screening, and automated customer service solutions, all aimed at enhancing efficiency and passenger satisfaction.

Abha International Airport’s transformation into Saudi Arabia’s first silent airport marks a significant milestone in the Kingdom’s journey towards enhancing passenger experience and aligning with global best practices. By reducing noise pollution and leveraging advanced technology, the airport creates a more serene and efficient environment for travellers. As this model gains traction, it is poised to revolutionise the travel experience across the region, contributing to Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030 and positioning the Kingdom as a leading global travel hub.
