In a stark warning to the international community, Ukraine’s Commander-in-Chief, Oleksandr Syrskyi, has raised urgent concerns about the rapidly deteriorating situation on the eastern frontlines of Ukraine, citing intensified Russian aggression and the urgent need for additional military support.
According to Syrskyi, recent days have witnessed a significant worsening of the situation in the eastern regions of Ukraine, with Russian forces escalating offensive actions following the presidential elections in Russia. Favourable weather conditions have reportedly aided Russian attacks, particularly in the Lyman and Bakhmut areas of the Donetsk region.
Russian forces, as described by Syrskyi, have been launching assaults supported by armoured vehicles, including tanks and infantry fighting vehicles. Despite suffering substantial losses, the enemy forces are said to be intensifying their efforts, deploying new units and armoured vehicles to reinforce their offensive capabilities.
The objectives of the Russian military in the near term, according to Syrskyi, include capturing the remaining portions of the Luhansk and Donetsk regions in eastern Ukraine. These territories, while currently only partially occupied by Russian forces, remain subject to ongoing hostilities and territorial disputes.
Of grave concern to Ukrainian authorities is the critical shortage of artillery in certain sectors of the eastern front, prompting urgent appeals to international allies for additional military aid and ammunition. However, approximately $60 billion in new military aid for Ukraine remains stalled in the U.S., exacerbating the challenges faced by Ukrainian forces on the ground.
Emphasising the importance of gaining a technological advantage over Russia, Syrskyi stressed that only through technological superiority could Ukraine hope to counter the numerical superiority of the enemy forces and seize the strategic initiative in the conflict.
