China expands mobile payment services for foreign travellers

China is rolling out new measures to make it easier for foreign travellers to use mobile payment services like Alipay and WeChat Pay, aiming to provide a seamless payment experience similar to that enjoyed by locals. The changes include significant increases in transaction limits, with the single transaction limit raised from $1,000 to $5,000 for overseas travellers and the annual cumulative transaction cap raised from $10,000 to $50,000.

These efforts are part of China’s broader push to enhance high-level openness and provide a hassle-free payment environment for visitors from abroad. While mobile payment has become ubiquitous in China, it has posed challenges for first-time foreign visitors, as many street vendors and small-scale service providers prefer mobile payment over cash or international credit cards.

To address these challenges, the Chinese government is implementing measures to help foreigners navigate the mobile payment landscape in China. Chinese banks are actively working to broaden the acceptance of overseas bank cards and facilitate cash usage within the country. Additionally, major payment institutions are encouraged to diversify the range of mobile payment products and develop digital yuan solutions tailored to the needs of foreign users.

Alipay and WeChat Pay, two of China’s leading mobile payment platforms, now allow foreign users to link their international credit cards, including Visa and Mastercard, to their platforms, streamlining the payment process. Strengthening regulations concerning mobile payments is also a priority, with China issuing rules on the supervision and administration of non bank payment institutions to address concerns over privacy protection.

Enhancing payment services for foreign travellers is expected to stimulate consumption in China amongst tourists and business travellers alike, thereby driving the development of related industries. Moreover, it serves to bolster China’s image as a welcoming and technologically advanced destination in the global arena.

Overall, China’s expansion of mobile payment services for foreign travellers reflects the country’s commitment to facilitating international exchanges and fostering a more inclusive and convenient environment for visitors from around the world.
