Prime Minister Russell Mmemo Dlamini of Eswatini paid a significant visit to Taiwanese President-elect Lai Ching-te on March 20, 2024. The visit came amid escalating tensions between China and Taiwan, with Eswatini standing out as one of the few countries recognising Taiwan’s sovereignty.

Eswatini, formerly known as Swaziland, has long maintained diplomatic ties with Taiwan, much to the chagrin of China, which regards Taiwan as a breakaway province. Prime Minister Dlamini’s visit to Taiwan underscores the strategic importance his nation places on its relationship with Taiwan, despite potential repercussions from China.

During the meeting, Prime Minister Dlamini and President-elect Lai Ching-te discussed matters of mutual interest, emphasising the enduring friendship between Eswatini and Taiwan. The visit is seen as a reaffirmation of Eswatini’s commitment to upholding its sovereignty and pursuing independent foreign policy decisions, notwithstanding pressure from larger powers.

The diplomatic gesture carries significant implications, particularly in the light of China’s growing assertiveness in the region. China has consistently opposed any form of recognition or engagement with Taiwan on the international stage, often employing diplomatic and economic coercion to dissuade countries from establishing ties with Taiwan.

Eswatini’s defiance of China’s stance underscores the complexities surrounding Taiwan’s international status and the strategic calculations smaller nations must make in navigating relations between China and Taiwan. The visit signals Eswatini’s determination to safeguard its sovereignty and pursue relationships based on mutual respect and shared interests.

In response to Prime Minister Dlamini’s visit, Chinese authorities have yet to issue an official statement. However, analysts anticipate potential repercussions from China, ranging from diplomatic protests to economic sanctions, as Beijing seeks to assert its influence in the region.

Overall, Prime Minister Dlamini’s visit to Taiwan serves as a poignant reminder of the evolving geopolitical landscape in the Asia-Pacific area.
