Investigations are underway into what caused a light aircraft carrying mainly tourists to crash in the Amazonas.

Authorities in Brazil have confirmed that 14 people killed in a plane crash on Saturday were mainly tourists.

The accident occurred in the Barcelos province, some 400km from Manaus’s state capital.

Regional governor Wilson Lima said 12 passengers and two crew were onboard the Embraer aircraft when it crashed in Barcelos province.

According to a Reuters report, investigators from the Accident Investigation and Prevention Center had been called in to investigate the reasons for the small aircraft crash, an Embraer Bandeirante with the registration PT-SOG.

Lamento profundamente a morte dos 12 passageiros e dois tripulantes, vítimas do acidente de avião ocorrido neste sábado, em Barcelos. Nossas equipes estão atuando, desde o primeiro momento, para prestar o apoio necessário. Aos familiares e amigos, minha solidariedade e orações.

In an interview with O Globo newspaper, Lima said the bodies had already been removed from the aircraft and that the victims were Brazilian tourists.

The region also experiences heavy rainfall. Speculations are rife that extreme weather elements may have affected planes’ landing.
