Brazil president Lula da Silva said on live broadcast that the Mercosur bloc, which includes Brazil, Argentina, Paraguay and Uruguay wants fair and mutually beneficial trade agreements with the European Union.
This comes after the European Union’s trade deal request to the region came with an addendum which would bind the countries to sustainability and climate change commitments which were not prior discussed. This addendum further ties the region to incurring penalties should they not comply with it.
Lula has continuously expressed his dissatisfaction of deals with western countries which are one sided. In his statement he said, “The European Union made a proposal, we sent a response, then they sent a letter imposing some conditions that we don’t accept”.
The negotiations are set to continue till the Mercosur bloc and the European Union reach a win-win trade agreement.
