South Africa’s annual Mining Indaba is underway in Cape Town, attracting more than 8000 delegates worldwide.
This years theme, ‘Embracing the Power of Positive Disruption: A Bold New Future for African Mining,’ will see stakeholders come together to fix several problems plaguing the sector.
In South Africa, mining is a major economic driver, accounting for more than 60% of the country’s export value.
However, the industry is facing trouble. More than 6,000 mines have been abandoned and subsequently infiltrated by illegal miners, or zama-zamas, as they are often referred to locally.
