British choreographer Wayne McGregor is renowned for his innovative approach to dance, often integrating cutting-edge technology into his works. His latest piece, Deepstaria, is no exception. Set to have its Asia premiere in Hong Kong, Deepstaria is a groundbreaking dance performance that leverages artificial intelligence (AI) to ensure that each performance is unique.

The Concept of Deepstaria
Deepstaria is inspired by the deep-sea jellyfish of the same name, known for its translucent, shape-shifting form. The performance aims to evoke the mysterious and otherworldly nature of these creatures. The dancers perform in a pitch-dark space coated in Vantablack, a material known for its light-absorbing properties, creating an environment that mimics the sunless depths of the ocean.

The Role of AI in Deepstaria
At the heart of Deepstaria is an AI engine called Bronze AI, which plays a crucial role in making each performance unique. Bronze AI is an audio engine that recomposes the musical score in real-time during each performance. The score, originally composed by Oscar-winning sound designer Nicolas Becker and music producer Lexx, is continuously altered by the AI, ensuring that no two performances are the same.

How AI Influences the Performance
The AI-driven music composition means that the dancers must adapt to the ever-changing score. This dynamic interaction between the dancers and the AI-generated music creates a fluid and unpredictable performance. The dancers respond to the nuances of the music, which can change tempo, rhythm, and mood in real-time. This interaction pushes the boundaries of traditional choreography, requiring the dancers to be highly adaptable and responsive.

Technological Integration and Artistic Expression
McGregor has a long history of integrating technology into his work. From using 3D CGI graphics in The Millennarium (1997) to exploring the possibilities of AI in Deepstaria, McGregor continually seeks to expand the horizons of dance. In Deepstaria, the use of Vantablack and Bronze AI not only enhances the audience’s visual and auditory experience but also challenges the conventional relationship between choreography and music.

Ethical and Environmental Considerations
While McGregor is enthusiastic about the possibilities of AI, he is also mindful of its ethical and environmental implications. He acknowledges the energy consumption associated with AI technologies and the potential ethical dilemmas they pose. McGregor’s thoughtful approach ensures that the integration of AI in Deepstaria is not just a technological gimmick but a meaningful exploration of its impact on art and society.

Deepstaria represents a bold step forward in the integration of AI and dance. By using AI to recompose the musical score in real-time, McGregor has created a performance that is perpetually evolving and unique. This innovative approach not only showcases the potential of AI in the arts but also challenges both performers and audiences to rethink the boundaries of dance. As Deepstaria makes its Asia premiere at Hong Kong Cultural Centre, it promises to be a mesmerizing and thought-provoking experience that pushes the limits of artistic expression.
