China has recently made a groundbreaking advancement in the realm of telecommunications by establishing three pivotal 6G technological standards under the auspices of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU). This development marks a significant step forward in setting the international framework for next-generation telecommunications, positioning China as a leader in the global race for 6G technology.

The Significance of 6G Technology

6G technology is expected to revolutionise the way we communicate. Offering unprecedented speeds, ultra-low latency, and enhanced connectivity, it aims to support a wide range of applications, from immersive virtual reality experiences to advanced AI-driven services. The establishment of global standards is crucial for ensuring inter-operability and seamless integration of 6G technologies across different regions and industries.

China’s Contribution to 6G Standards

China’s contribution to the 6G standards was officially recognized on 26 July 2024, during a plenary session of the ITU’s Telecommunication Standardisation Sector Study Group. This group focuses on future networks and emerging technologies, making it the ideal platform for discussing and approving new standards.

The three standards introduced by China address various critical aspects of 6G technology

Immersive Communication: This standard goes beyond traditional virtual reality (VR) and multimedia screens. It encompasses any service that requires high bandwidth, low latency, and high reliability. This includes applications such as holographic communication, remote surgery, and advanced gaming experiences.

Ultra-Reliable Low-Latency Communication (URLLC): This standard is designed to support mission-critical applications that require extremely reliable and low-latency communication. Examples include autonomous vehicles, industrial automation, and smart grid technologies.

AI Integration: The third standard focuses on the integration of artificial intelligence into 6G networks. This includes the use of AI for network optimisation, predictive maintenance, and enhanced security measures.

The Road Ahead

The approval of these standards by the ITU is testament to China’s growing influence in the global telecommunications industry. It also highlights the country’s commitment to advancing technological innovation and setting the stage for the future of communication.

However, the journey towards widespread 6G adoption is still in its early stages. There are regional differences in the enthusiasm for 6G development, with East Asian operators like China Mobile, Japan’s Docomo, and Korea’s SKT being more proactive compared to their counterparts in Europe and the US. This disparity underscores the need for continued collaboration and standardisation efforts to ensure a cohesive global rollout of 6G technology.

China’s establishment of three pivotal 6G technological standards under the ITU marks a significant milestone in the evolution of next-generation telecommunications. These standards will play a crucial role in shaping the future of communication, enabling a wide range of innovative applications and services. As the world moves closer to the 6G era, China’s leadership in this field will undoubtedly have a lasting impact on the global telecommunications landscape.
