Brazil has created an overall 1.49 million jobs during the first seven months of the year 2024, surpassing the 1.48 million jobs created in the same period in 2023. In July alone, 188 000 jobs were created leading to a 32% increase from the previous year. This raised the number of official contractors to a record breaking 47 million. This indicates the effectiveness of employment strategies by the government.
The past few months saw a rise in hiring particularly in retail, hospitality and tourism sectors, with the largest number of jobs being in the services sector followed by manufacturing and trade. Brazil launched special government programs and campaigns mid-2024, which tackled areas that were experiencing high unemployment and provided immediate employment opportunities.
Job growth and opportunity was particularly strong in the services sector in areas such as finance, real estate, information technology and professional and administrative services. This growth contributed by an additional 45 352 formal positions. Public administration, social security, education, dense, health, and social services saw a rise of 11,102 jobs.
The manufacturing sector on its own led with 45 803 additional jobs with the water, sewerage, waste management and decontamination sector coming in second with 1,986 new jobs. A portion of this growth can be attributed to the big-scale infrastructure projects. The country’s investment in transportation, urban development and energy, led to the improvement of Brazil’s infrastructure and generated thousands of construction and maintenance jobs.
Programs such as education and vocational training were significantly enhanced to address the skills gap in the labour market. These programs have further equipped workers with the necessary skills and knowledge needed in the market.
Majority of new job opportunities were in the south-east of the country, with Sao Paulo leading with the highest hiring rate. Brazil’s progress not only highlights a strong labour market, but it also lays the foundation for economic growth and stability in future. While Brail is still recovering from previous economic challenges, businesses are expanding along with their workforce to meet consumer demands and project needs.
