The New Development Bank (NDB) issued a statement on Saturday, approving a new loan of up to $1 billion to support water and sanitation projects for poorer households in South Africa. The funding will be provided through the country’s Municipal Infrastructure Grant program, which is designed to assist municipalities in addressing service backlogs and improve basic services for poorer communities.

This loan will allow municipalities to build and repair existing infrastructure such as pipelines and sewage systems. Clean water access remains a critical issue for South Africans particularly in areas with inadequate resources. As a result, the loan will improve access to clean water for communities that once struggled with contaminated water.

Additionally, the NDB’s funding will allow for development and enhancement of the sanitation infrastructure, ensuring minimal health hazards linked to poor sanitation. This is targeted at improving the overall quality of life for citizens. The BRICS bank, established by emerging economies in 2015, also approved a $150 million equivalent in the Chinese currency renminbi to China’s Bank of Communications Financial Leasing.

This funding is particularly for a project focused on transporting liquefied natural gas (LNG).
Furthermore, the statement released mentioned that the loan will fund the purchase of at least three LNG carriers to meet its growing demand in China. It will assist in narrowing the gap between the growing need for LNG and the available capacity.

The loan approval is a significant commitment to tackling the ongoing water crisis in South Africa. This project will potentially change the lives of many South Africans who live in poorer communities. It will be necessary to track the development and effectiveness of the projects to assess their impact and endurance.
