15-year-old Indian chess prodigy Aarav Dengla has won the oldest and most prestigious chess tournament in France, the Cap d’Agde Chess Festival 2024. Aarav’s victory not only adds a significant feather to his cap but also brings immense pride to his home country, further solidifying his status as one of the brightest young talents in the world of chess. The Cap d’Agde Chess Festival, renowned for attracting top chess talent from around the globe, was for the first time ever, held outside the capital city due to the upcoming Olympic Games.
It saw 250 players contend for the coveted title. This year, the competition was particularly fierce, featuring a mix of seasoned grandmasters and promising young players. Despite the stiff competition, Aarav demonstrated exceptional skill, strategy and composure throughout the tournament. Aarav’s journey to the top of the podium was marked by a series of impressive victories against highly ranked opponents.
In the final match, he faced French grandmaster Maxime Vachier-Lagrave, a formidable opponent with a wealth of experience. In 2016, shortly after his seventh birthday, Aarav set a then record as the youngest gold medal winner at the under-10 Mumbai School Sports Association chess tournament.

A student at one of Mumbai’s premier schools, he manages to balance his rigorous training schedule with his studies, consistently achieving top grades.
