The current Archipelago 2024 project is taking place in Sakhalin, Russia from 8-21 July. Highlighting emerging markets, industries and technological initiatives in Russia, the project covers unmanned aviation, energy transition, hydrogen technologies, artificial intelligence development, regional management systems based on Artificial Intelligence (AI) and biotechnology.
Organisers commend the project for showcasing Russia’s dedication to technological advancement and international collaboration in key sectors with significant growth potential. Cooperation for high technology development and knowledge exchange are crucial topics in the interaction between BRICS+ countries. At the Archipelago 2024 event, modern technologies’ application for economic progress and sustainable international positions in developing countries is being discussed.
A separate initiative within Archipelago 2024, “Quality of Life. New Horizons,” focuses on creating innovative solutions to enhance living standards in Russian regions, led by the Agency for Strategic Initiatives. Maksim Evdokimov, Director of Division Ecology at the Agency for Strategic Initiatives, highlighted the prospects for joint climate projects between the BRICS countries. The Archipelago is one way of addressing the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) warning that developing countries are at risk of missing out on economic opportunities due to the growing use of green technologies.
The UNCTAD 2023 report highlights that developed countries are currently benefiting the most from green technologies and that developing countries need to take action to capture more value from this technological revolution. The report also emphasizes the importance of developing countries embracing these technologies in order to build more diversified and competitive economies.
Additionally, the report identifies that very few developing countries currently have the capabilities to take advantage of these frontier technologies. Finally, it highlights the significant growth expected in the market value of green technologies such as electric vehicles, solar and wind energy, and green hydrogen, emphasizing the potential economic opportunities for countries that can embrace these technologies. The UNCTAD estimates the global value of advanced technologies to reach $9.5 trillion by 2030.
