Leaders from the BRICS+ bloc of countries have responded with a mix of concern and calls for stability to the recent assassination attack on former US president Donald Trump. The BRICS leaders join the international community in condemning this attack.

Brazil’s Reaction
Brazil’s president, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, called the incident unacceptable and said the attack must be “strongly repudiated” by all democracy defenders.
His predecessor, former president Jair Bolsonaro expressed deep concern over the attempt on Trump’s life. In a statement released shortly after the news broke, Bolsonaro condemned the act as a threat to global stability and reiterated Brazil’s commitment to combating terrorism in all its forms. Bolsonaro emphasized the need for international cooperation in ensuring the safety of world leaders, highlighting the incident as a reminder of the persistent challenges posed by political violence.

Russia’s Response
Russian President Vladimir Putin, known for his complex relationship with the US, issued a cautious statement condemning the assassination attempt. Putin emphasised the importance of respecting sovereignty and the rule of law in international relations, and expressed hope for a swift and peaceful resolution to the crisis. The Kremlin’s spokesperson underscored Russia’s commitment to maintaining open diplomatic channels and supporting efforts to stabilise the situation.

India’s Perspective
Prime Minister Narendra Modi of India conveyed shock and concern over the incident, describing it as a grave threat to global security. Modi stressed the importance of upholding democratic values and the rule of law, calling for a thorough investigation to bring the perpetrators to justice. India, a staunch advocate of multilateralism within the BRICS framework, reiterated its commitment to supporting efforts aimed at promoting peace and stability on the global stage.

China’s Statement
President Xi Jinping of China reacted with a measured response, expressing concern over the implications of the assassination attempt on global stability. Xi emphasized the need for all parties involved to exercise restraint and avoid actions that could escalate tensions further. China, a key player in international diplomacy and trade, reaffirmed its commitment to upholding the principles of non-interference and peaceful coexistence among nations.

South Africa’s Reaction
South African President, Cyril Ramaphosa, condemned the assassination attempt in strong terms, describing it as a cowardly act aimed at undermining democracy and stability. Ramaphosa emphasised the importance of upholding the rule of law and fostering dialogue to resolve international disputes peacefully. South Africa, as the current chair of BRICS, called for unity among member states in addressing the broader implications of the incident on global security and stability.

BRICS Collective Response
Collectively, the BRICS leaders expressed solidarity with the US and reaffirmed their commitment to international cooperation in combating terrorism and promoting global peace. The assassination attempt underscored the interconnectedness of global security challenges and the need for enhanced collaboration amongst nations.
