Russian Ambassador, Evgeny Terekhin, has praised Ethiopia’s participation in the activities of BRICS. It has been six months since Ethiopia joined the association. At a recent forum, the country was represented by Adem Farah who is the Vice President of the Prosperity Party and Head of the Democracy building Centre.
Evgeny said, “I can strongly declare that the six months that have elapsed since Ethiopia joined BRICS have already demonstrated a successful and effective participation of Addis Ababa in the activities of this association, which objectively aims and contributes to the construction of a multipolar world.”
Furthermore, he said, “Let me remind, this year our country is chairing the BRICS Association, and it is very symbolical that the same year Ethiopia became the full-fledged member of this association, and it is one of our primary tasks as a chairing country to help the new member countries to harmoniously join different formats of participation in BRICS association.”
Mamo Mihretu, previously the Governor of the National Bank of Ethiopia and currently Ethiopia’s Sherpa to BRICS, was a participant in a gathering of Sherpas and Sous Sherpas from member states. Ethiopian foreign minister, Taye Atsekeselassie’s, participation in the foreign affairs meetings is indicative of the country’s active involvement in BRICS discussions, covering a wide range of topics that are relevant on an organisational level and in bilateral exchanges between Ethiopian officials and their counterparts from BRICS countries.
The foreign affairs meeting was aimed at securing Ethiopia’s membership in the newly established New Development Bank. Such membership would be a huge advantage for Ethiopia by ensuring access to necessary funds for sustaining economic development and reducing concerns about funding and foreign currency scarcity.
Atsekeselassie highlighted Ethiopia’s commitment to intensifying its role within the BRICS Dialogue with Emerging Markets and Developing countries.
He pointed out that many international organisations including the United Nations and international financial institutions need reform to reflect the current global landscape. He further advocated for reforms that would provide developing countries with a more significant voice and role in these institutions. In the four-day discussions, Ethiopia presented its perspectives to BRICS members on a range of topics of mutual interest.
Farah emphasized the Prosperity Party’s dedication to strengthening engagement with the BRICS platform, noting its close following of BRICS since its inception.
He further highlighted Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed’s vision for expanded engagement with BRICS member states, emphasizing Ethiopia’s active participation in the dynamic coalition. Ambassador Terekhin elaborated, “At the end of the four-day forum, a joint coalition of 24 points was published, which also reflects Ethiopia’s position on various contemporary topics. I believe that Ethiopia’s participation in such events certainly contributes to the expansion of its political opportunity and growth of authority on the world stage, strengthening multilateral cooperation in key areas of the current international agenda,”
Additionally, Farah emphasized the party’s unwavering commitment to fundamental principles such as sovereignty, equal security, multilateralism, global justice, territorial integrity and peaceful coexistence among nations. He advocated for greater representation of Africa and Latin America, regardless of their significant population in the UN security council.
