Cairo, Egypt – Egyptian officials and a delegation from Hamas recently met in Cairo to discuss the continuation of the ceasefire and the terms of a potential prisoner exchange, according to reliable sources.
Hamas’ Stance on the Prisoner Exchange
Leading the Hamas delegation, senior official Khalil Al-Hayya reaffirmed the group’s readiness to hand over a group of captives as per the existing agreement with Israel. However, Hamas firmly rejected demands from U.S. President Donald Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu for the release of all Israeli captives on the specified date.
Guarantees for Ceasefire Continuation
Hamas emphasized the necessity of securing key guarantees to sustain the truce, including:
- The unhindered entry of pre-approved humanitarian aid, such as mobile homes and other relief supplies.
- Medical evacuations for injured and critically ill individuals needing urgent treatment.
Discussions on Gaza’s Future and Reconstruction
According to inside sources, Egyptian officials engaged in discussions with Hamas regarding the long-term stability of Gaza. Topics included preventing the forced displacement of Palestinians and developing a sustainable reconstruction strategy.
A proposed alternative involves Hamas relinquishing control of Gaza to another entity, potentially a Palestinian or Arab administration. Additionally, there were indications that a safe passage might be offered to Hamas’ military and political leadership should they agree to the plan.
Egypt’s Proposed Reconstruction Initiative
The Egyptian government is set to propose a comprehensive reconstruction strategy for Gaza that does not involve displacing its residents. This initiative aims to persuade both the United States and Israel to abandon any existing displacement plans.
