UN Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief Coordinator Valerie Amos toured today the refuge complex holding more that 440,000 refugees during the third day of her visit to southern Somalia and to the Kenya-hosted refugee complex to asses the impact of the famine. Her visit comes as the UN said its moving on two fronts to counter the worsening food crisis in the Horn of Africa, with an immediate infusion of food in an area where 640,000 children alone are threatened with acute malnutrition.

Somalia, a country situated in the horn of Africa, is at the forefront of a famine crisis.

The country has been grappling with a devastating drought, and conflict between the Al Shabaab militant group and the government is exacerbating the already dire humanitarian situation in the region.

Increasing food prices have also impacted their ability to eat.

BGTN channel head travelled to Somalia to unpack the severity of this drought.

Prolonged dry spells, erratic rainfall, and water scarcity have left millions of Somalis in desperate need of assistance.

Crops have withered, livestock have perished, and water sources have dried up, pushing communities to the brink of survival and famine.

The impact on food security is severe, with many facing acute malnutrition and hunger. Displacement has surged as families search for water and sustenance, putting additional strain on already overcrowded famine refugee camps.

International organisations and governments are working tirelessly to provide relief, but the scale of the crisis demands sustained attention and support to prevent a full-blown catastrophe.
