Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov says his country and China are working towards establishing a fair multipolar world order free from hegemony, and neo-colonial and colonial practices.

He says the new order needs to be free of the current one created by the United States and the rest of the collective West, which bows without question to Washington’s will.

Lavrov says China and Russia will continue to defend the need to rectify this situation in international economic relations.

He was speaking in Beijing following talks with his Chinese counterpart, Wang Yi. Lavrov says they discussed issues of mutual interest, which will be considered in more detail later this year during the upcoming meetings of five intergovernmental commissions. The issues include the economy, trade, investment, and innovative technology.

The Russian Foreign Minister also emphasised the presumption of innocence, singling out the west for imposing illegal sanctions on a number of states, including Russia. Turning to the relationship between the two countries, the ministers discussed the forthcoming 75th anniversary of diplomatic relations. Lavrov says the Soviet Union was the first to recognise the People’s Republic of China the very next day after it was established on 1 October, 1949, and helped it rebuild the nation.

They also explored potential initiatives for marking the upcoming 80th anniversary of Victory over German Nazism and Japanese militarism next year. Lavrov says it’s important to recognise the pivotal role played by the people of the Soviet Union and the People’s Republic of China in defeating Germany and Japan.
