South Africa’s ambassador to Russia, Mzvukile Maqetuka, is warning that should the African National Congress lose power in the upcoming general elections, the country’s BRICS+ membership could be in jeopardy.

Speaking to Russia’s TASS Publication, the ambassador said that if the Democratic Alliance managed to unseat the ANC, it’s possible there’d be a shift in foreign policy to facilitate a BRICS+ exit.

Maqetuka has blamed this on, what he calls, the DA’s stance on South Africa’s relationship with Russia.

2023 marked impressive growth for the economic alliance and is seen to auger well for 2024.

The BRICS economic alliance’s recently instituted expansion plan looks likely to keep the countries on an upward trajectory and losing South Africa could signal a significant setback.

A number of polls suggest that the ANC is well below the 50% mark in voter support and may need to form a coalition to stay in power.

However, if the party fails to achieve a result above 40%, this may prove to be a step to far for the governing party to stay in power.

The Democratic Alliance has formed a coalition with other parties to try to unseat the ANC.
