In a strategic move transcending global geopolitical complexities, Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa (BRICS) nations are driving a substantial initiative to bolster foreign policy dialogue.

The catalyst for this diplomatic discourse emerged during the BRICS High-Level Dialogue and Symposium, jointly organised by the Department of History at the University of South Africa (UNISA), the Thabo Mbeki African School of Public and International Affairs (TM-School), UNISA, and ACCORD.

Under the theme “The Role of External Actors in Past, Present and Future of Peace and Security Engagement in Africa,” this two-day event delved into pivotal issues shaping the trajectory of the BRICS+ Bloc and the broader Global South.

Historical proclivity of BRICS nations

Central to the dialogue was exploring the historical proclivity of BRICS nations to operate in relative isolation.

Ambassador Welile Nhlapo, Senior Advisor at ACCORD, provided penetrating insights, shedding light on concerns regarding the coherence of the bloc’s foreign policy formulation, given the diverse national interests among its member states.

Beyond dialogue, the Symposium, a collaborative effort between UNISA and ACCORD, seeks to crystallise these discussions into an edited book for publication by UNISA Press and ACCORD.

This initiative seamlessly aligns with ACCORD’s strategic imperative of delivering evidence-based analysis, policy support, and knowledge to address complex conflicts, underscoring a commitment to fostering international understanding and cooperation.

The current focus on intensified foreign policy dialogue within the BRICS framework assumes a pivotal role. It signifies a collective and purposeful effort by these influential nations to address the intricate nuances of peace diplomacy in the African context.

As BRICS nations navigate the challenges and opportunities on the global stage, this dialogue becomes a linchpin in shaping their collaborative approach, reaffirming their standing as key players in the evolving international landscape.
