BRICS citizens are in for a tech upgrade. that’s according to The BRICS Manufacturing Working group, which has been meeting in Centurion, South Africa, this week.

The meeting showcased some of the technologies being developed across the BRICS world. The projects are all aimed at improving living standards for BRICS citizens, reducing manufacturing costs and diminishing manufacturing waste.

The most notable projects are:

Aerated Autoclaved Concrete (AAC)

AAC is a lightweight, precast, concrete-like material made from sand, cement, lime, and aluminium powder. It’s produced through a process that incorporates air bubbles to create a porous structure, resulting in a lightweight and highly insulating material. AAC is cured in an a high-pressure chamber, to attain its final properties. It’s lightweight, durable and fire resistant

Bioplastics

Bioplastics offer an important alternative to conventional plastics, which contribute to environmental pollution and depletion of finite fossil fuel resources. While bioplastics have their advantages, challenges still exist, including the need for efficient recycling systems, proper disposal methods, and addressing concerns about land use for growing feedstock. Ongoing research and technological advancements are aimed at improving the sustainability, cost-effectiveness, and performance of bioplastics.

Cell and Gene Therapy

Cell and gene therapy are cutting-edge medical approaches that involve the use of cells or genetic materials to treat or prevent diseases. These therapies have gained significant attention in recent years due to their potential to provide targeted, personalized treatments for a wide range of medical conditions.

Hydrogen Fuel cells

Hydrogen fuel cells are electrochemical devices that convert hydrogen and oxygen into electricity, with water and heat as byproducts. They are a promising and environmentally friendly technology for producing electricity, particularly for transportation and stationary power generation.

Anthrosphere mining

The “anthrosphere” refers to the sphere of human influence and activity, encompassing all aspects of human life, society, and impact on the Earth’s environment. Anthrosphere Mining is the process of going back through waste dumps to find materials that can be reused and repurposed.

One of the most prolific types of Anthrosphere mining is gold reclamation from e-waste. E – waste contains more gold per tonne than gold ore, all of which can be reclaimed and reused.
