From August 25 to August 27, 2025, the African Union (AU) convened a pivotal Continental Consultation on Synthetic Drug Supply Reduction in Gaborone, Botswana. Themed “Strengthening Efforts Towards Addressing Drug Trafficking and Advancing Crime Prevention, Criminal Justice, and Rule of Law in Africa,” the consultation aimed to develop a strategic framework for a collective response to illicit drug trafficking across the continent. Objectives and Significance

The consultation focused on:

  • Promoting Inter-Agency Collaboration – enhancing mechanisms for real-time intelligence exchange systems.
  • Data Collection and Analysis – strengthening the Pan African Epidemiology Network on Drug Use (PAENDU) supply reduction data collection tool.
  • Harmonizing Legal Frameworks – aligning drug control legislation across Member States.
  • Capacity Building – expanding forensic laboratory capacity and improving K-9 deployment with specialized training.
  • Sustainable Financing – establishing reliable financing mechanisms to support drug control initiatives.
  • Updating National Strategies – reviewing and updating national drug control strategies to counter emerging synthetic drug trends. (AU.int)

Keynote Address

H.E. Advocate Duma Boko, President of the Republic of Botswana, delivered the keynote, warning that the spread of synthetic drugs is occurring at “pandemic velocity.” He emphasized the urgent need for continental and global collaboration, calling for advanced detection tools, shared intelligence, and stronger enforcement to dismantle illicit networks.
