Lebanon took center stage at the 17th World Forum on Food and Agriculture and the Berlin International Green Week 2025, marking its presence with a strong delegation led by Ambassador to Germany, Mustapha Adib and Agriculture Ministry Director General, Louis Lahoud. The prestigious event gathered agricultural ministers, policymakers and international organizations to address pressing global challenges, including food security, climate resilience, and sustainable agricultural development.

Key Themes: Food Security and Sustainable Agriculture

The discussions at the forum revolved around strategies to combat global hunger and strengthen food systems against crises, climate change and biodiversity loss. A key focus was placed on enhancing international cooperation to ensure sustainable food production and the development of resilient supply chains that can withstand economic and environmental challenges.

Lebanon’s Agricultural Struggles in the Face of Conflict

During the meetings, the Lebanese delegation presented an in-depth analysis of the country’s agricultural sector, highlighting the devastating impact of recent conflicts. The ongoing Israeli aggression has severely affected Lebanon’s agricultural lands, with extensive damage resulting from the use of destructive weapons such as white phosphorus and cluster bombs. These attacks have not only crippled farming activities but also threatened food security and rural livelihoods across the nation.

Economic Crisis and the Call for International Support

In addition to the security concerns, Lebanon’s economic crisis continues to place immense pressure on farmers, making it increasingly difficult to sustain agricultural operations. The delegation called upon international organizations and agriculture ministries worldwide to step in with support. Key requests included assistance in rebuilding infrastructure, launching new agricultural programs and facilitating Lebanese agricultural exports to global markets.

Strengthening Lebanon-Germany Agricultural Trade

Acknowledging the strong ties between Lebanon and Germany, Agriculture Ministry Director General Lahoud expressed gratitude to Ambassador Adeeb and the Lebanese embassy team for their dedication in promoting Lebanese agricultural exports. In recent years, efforts have been made to open German markets to Lebanese products, creating opportunities for farmers and food producers to expand their reach.

Lebanon and Germany also explored ways to enhance cooperation between the Lebanese Ministry of Agriculture, the embassy and the expatriate community in Germany. The goal is to increase the export of Lebanese food products, leveraging the country’s rich agricultural heritage and quality produce to tap into the European market.

Looking Ahead: Building a Resilient Agricultural Future

Lebanon’s participation in the Berlin forum underscores its commitment to overcoming adversity and ensuring a sustainable agricultural future. By fostering international partnerships and advocating for stronger support systems, Lebanon aims to rebuild its agricultural sector, empower farmers, and strengthen food security in the face of ongoing challenges.

As the world grapples with climate change, food scarcity and geopolitical tensions, Lebanon’s call for global solidarity resonates beyond its borders. The success of its agricultural sector depends not only on domestic resilience but also on international cooperation, making events like the Berlin International Green Week vital for shaping a sustainable and food-secure future.
