The third Beit Hail Heritage Festival, titled “Your Home Away from Home,” is currently captivating visitors at the Aja Park Entertainment Center, showcasing Saudi Arabia’s rich cultural heritage with a particular emphasis on traditional craftsmanship. The festival features a prominent exhibit on “Hail Wooden Door Making and Plaster Engraving,” drawing significant public interest and enthusiasm.

At the heart of the festival is Abdullah Al-Khazzam, a local artisan recognized by the Saudi National Handicrafts Program “Bari.” Al-Khazzam is demonstrating his expertise in crafting wooden doors, highlighting the unique characteristics of regional designs. He contrasts the traditional Hail door, which features four crossbars, with the Najdi door, which typically has three. Utilizing tamarisk wood and other local timbers, Al-Khazzam’s intricate craftsmanship captivates festivalgoers, who are deeply appreciative of the details and cultural significance embedded in his work.

In addition to door-making, the festival showcases Islamic plaster engravings, integral to Najdi architecture. These engravings adorn mock-ups of building entrances and reception rooms, reflecting the social fabric of historical Saudi life. Visitors have shown a notable increase in interest in purchasing replicas of these traditional designs for their homes, adding a personal touch of heritage to modern living spaces.

Al-Khazzam’s exhibit also includes replicas of historical water-raising devices and ornate camel saddles, enriching the festival’s cultural offerings. His designs often incorporate Qur’anic verses and local motifs, illustrating the deep connection between craftsmanship and cultural identity in Saudi Arabia. As of July 21, 2024, the festival has already attracted over 68,000 visitors.

Alongside Al-Khazzam’s exhibits, the event boasts Al – Sadu embroidery, a stunning form of needlework featuring geometrical shapes handmade by Bedouin tribes. This traditional embroidery has been adapted into various items such as table runners, pillows, and scarves, showcasing its versatility and enduring beauty. The festival also features classic cars, artisanal pieces created by Saudi artists, and live workshops demonstrating the weaving and clothing-making process.

Guests are entertained by folklore performers showcasing the Saudi Ardah dance, adding a vibrant and festive atmosphere to the event. The Beit Hail Heritage Festival continues to serve as a dynamic platform for celebrating and preserving Saudi Arabia’s rich cultural heritage, providing both locals and tourists with a unique opportunity to immerse themselves in the nation’s historical and artistic traditions.
