India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi has been visiting Russia on two-day official visit that concludes on July 9. A top official says the key issues being discussed with President Vladimir Putin includes India’s trade imbalance with Russia, and the situation of Indian soldiers who were reportedly misled into fighting in the Ukraine conflict. Modi’s visit comes after a three-year gap and forms part of annual summits launched in 2000 between New Delhi and Moscow.

Modi’s discussions with Vladimir Putin involves strategic initiatives aimed at balancing current trade deficits and encouraging mutual investments. With the trade imbalance between India and Russia being a longstanding concern, efforts are expected to focus on exploring various avenues for enhanced economic cooperation and trade relations.

Modi’s visit is significant as it follows international condemnation and sanctions against Russia for its invasion of Ukraine. Prime Minister Modi last visited Russia in 2019, attending an economic summit held in the Far East of Vladivostok. Since the cold war, the relationship between India and Russia has been robust. Indian nationals allegedly caught up in the Ukraine conflict has been a significant issue with Russia.

These discussions may include efforts to secure the release of Indians captured in the conflict. There have been cases where Indians were misled with promises of jobs and education in Russia but ended up being involved in military activities in Ukraine resulting in casualties. Analysts say Modi’s visit is a strategic opportunity for Moscow to show that a leader with significant stature is willing to show support.

This visit dismisses any perception of a weakening of ties between India and Russia Furthermore, Modi’s visit highlights India’s multifaceted diplomatic approach, aiming to strengthen the relationship between Russia while navigating global geopolitical obstacles. The talks have focused on a wide range of issues, topics and concerns about defence operations, cultural exchanges and energy partnerships.

In Russia, Modi is expected to interact with the Indian community during his visit. A community event on July 9, aims to highlight the cultural bonds between India and Russia, with performances from Russian artists that are skilled in the classical Indian dance form, Kathak.

Vinay Kwatra, India’s foreign secretary, remarked: “Trade remains imbalanced, which is a matter of priority in our discussions with the Russian side,” Additionally, he mentioned that India hopes to “correct” this by pushing exports across sectors including farm, technology, pharmaceuticals and services. Kwatra said that India-Russia trade has increased significantly in 2023-2024 and reached close to $65 billion due to strong energy cooperation.

However, Indian exports accounted for just $4 billion. He added, “”We have been in very regular touch with G7 essentially to protect and progress our national interest and our national needs … whether it relates to diamonds or relates to other sectors of industry and economy,”
