This coming weekend, the UFC will hold its first event in Saudi Arabia. The main event – up until late last week – was scheduled to be former UFC middleweight champion Robert Whittaker vs Khamzat Chimaev. However, due to Chimaev being hospitalised and “violently ill” according to UFC president Dana White – he is unable to fight – and they needed to find a new opponent for Whittaker to face.

Ikram Aliskerov is the man who will save the day for the UFC by stepping in and facing Whittaker at the UFC Saudi Arabia. The unranked Aliskerov was supposed to compete at the UFC Apex this past weekend on the undercard of Alex Perez vs Tatsuro Taira. But he has now been given was the huge fight against Whittaker.

The Russian was scheduled to take on Antonio Troccoli, who is a Brazilian who hasn’t fought in almost three years. The middleweight division right now is in a bit of limbo as there are not many top-ranked fighters who are available. Some have just come out of fights or already have fights booked. Meanwhile, Ikram Aliskerov hailing from Dagestan, Russia, has quickly risen through the ranks of the MMA world.

Known for his grappling prowess and tenacity, he made a name for himself with a series of impressive victories. Aliskerov brings a unique skill set to the octagon. His combination of powerful wrestling and submission skills has proven to be a formidable challenge for his opponents. Standing opposite Aliskerov will be Robert Whittaker, a seasoned veteran and former UFC middleweight champion.

Known for his striking ability and tactical acumen. Whittaker has faced and defeated some of the biggest names in the sport. His resilience and fighting spirit have endeared him to fans around the world. Whittaker’s career has been defined by his ability to overcome adversity. After losing his title to Israel Adesanya in 2019, he then embarked on a journey of redemption and secured several impressive wins to re-establish himself as a top contender.

His experience coupled with his well-rounded skill set makes him a formidable opponent for any fighter. The UFC had to go big on their first visit to Saudi Arabia and that is exactly what they have done. Regardless of the outcome, the clash between Ikram Aliskerov and Robert Whittaker promises to be an electrifying encounter showcasing the very best of mixed martial arts. As the fighters prepare to step into the octagon, the world will be watching and  ready to witness a battle that could shape the future of the middleweight division.

The UFC Saudi Arabia main card as it stands:

Robert Whittaker vs Ikram Aliskerov

Sergei Pavlovich vs Alexander Volkov

Kelvin Gastelum vs Daniel Rodriguez

Muhammad Naimov vs Melsik Baghdasaryan

Johnny Walker vs Volkan Oezdemir
