It is exactly four months to the day that these continental rivals faced off in the semi-final of the Africa Cup of Nations, and on that day, there was nothing to separate the teams after 120 minutes, but Nigeria ultimately emerged victorious in the penalty shoot-out over Bafana Bafana. The Super Eagles went on to lose the final to the host nation Ivory Coast, which was only their second defeat in a competitive fixture since a 1-0 away loss to Guinea-Bissau back in March 2023.

Now under the guidance of Finidi George, who replaced Portuguese tactician Jose Peseiro earlier this year, Nigeria are gunning for what would be their seventh World Cup qualification berth. They have featured in three of the past four world tournaments, with the exception of the most recent event in Qatar. This match is pivotal for both South Africa and Nigeria as they vie for a top spot in their qualifying group.

Nigeria, known as the Super Eagles, have a strong track record in World Cup qualifiers, regularly securing their place in the tournament. Bafana Bafana have also had their moments on the international stage and are keen to return to the World Cup after missing out on the last edition. The match in Nigeria adds an extra layer of challenge for South Africa, as they will face not only a formidable opponent but also the passionate Nigerian fans who are known for creating a daunting atmosphere for visiting teams.

A win for either side would be a significant step toward securing their place in the next stage of the qualifiers. South Africa comes into this match with a blend of youth and experience. Coach Hugo Broos has been working to build a cohesive unit that can compete at the highest level. One of the standout players is Percy Tau, whose creativity and pace make him a constant threat to any defence. Tau’s ability to create scoring opportunities will be crucial for Bafana Bafana.

In the midfield, Bongani Zungu and Teboho Mokoena bring a mix of defensive solidity and playmaking ability. Zungu’s role as a disruptor of the opposition’s play and Serero’s vision and passing range will be key in controlling the midfield battle. In defence, Ronwen Williams has been reliable between the posts, providing confidence to the backline with his shot-stopping abilities and command of the penalty area. Nigeria, under the leadership of coach Finidi George, boasts a squad filled with talent and depth.

Victor Osimhen, the prolific Napoli striker, is in sensational form and is expected to lead the attack. Osimhen’s speed, strength, and finishing make him one of the most dangerous forwards in world football right now. Alongside him, Ademola Lookman and Samuel Chukwueze add further firepower and creativity, capable of unlocking even the most stubborn defences. The game is scheduled to kick off at 21h00 CAT at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium and by looking at Nigeria’s line up on paper, it is going to be a long night for Bafana Bafana.
