At the WSIS+20 Forum High-Level Event, the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), the UN agency for digital technologies, celebrated a landmark achievement as its Partner2Connect Digital Coalition (P2C) secured over USD 50 billion in investment commitments toward global connectivity. This milestone surpasses half of the coalition’s ambitious USD 100 billion goal set for 2026.

The forum, held from May 27 to 31, witnessed significant pledges from various global entities, including:

China’s Expanding Influence:
– China continues to play a pivotal role in the global connectivity landscape, leveraging its technological advancements and infrastructure capabilities. The nation has been instrumental in facilitating large-scale digital infrastructure projects worldwide, especially in developing regions.

Saudi Arabia’s Vision:
– Saudi Arabia, as part of its Vision 2030 initiative, has been increasingly active in fostering digital transformation and connectivity. The kingdom’s investments in technology and innovation are aimed at diversifying its economy and enhancing its global competitiveness.

Other notable commitments include:

AT&T:
– Pledged USD 3 billion to connect 25 million people in the hardest-to-reach areas of the United States by 2030, bringing their total commitment to USD 5 billion since 2021.

Government of Canada:
– Investing CAD 2 billion (USD 1.46 billion) in the AI Compute Access Fund to support AI businesses and researchers, along with an additional CAD 400 million (USD 292 million) for AI adoption across the economy.

Elle International:
– Made three pledges worth USD 106 million to enhance the quality of life for 20 million women and girls in South Africa through digital platforms, smart solutions, data, and AI models.

Microsoft:

– Supporting projects to rapidly accelerate the inclusion of people with disabilities in technology systems, designs, and features, including AI.

The participation of China and Saudi Arabia highlights their strategic interests in shaping the future of global digital connectivity. China’s Belt and Road Initiative has been pivotal in providing the necessary infrastructure and investments to connect remote areas, while Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030 emphasises the importance of digital transformation for sustainable development.

The WSIS+20 Forum’s outcomes will inform the UN General Assembly’s WSIS+20 review scheduled for September 2025. As the Partner2Connect Digital Coalition continues to grow, the contributions from key players like China and Saudi Arabia will be crucial in achieving the coalition’s goals, driving forward the agenda of universal and inclusive connectivity.

The ITU’s announcement at the WSIS+20 Forum High-Level Event marks a significant step toward bridging the digital divide. With the combined efforts and substantial investments from countries like China and Saudi Arabia, the world moves closer to realising a future where global connectivity is a reality for all.
