Iran says it successfully exported 10.5 million metric tonnes of cement over nine months last year – a major boost for the country’s Gross Domestic Product. Reports say Iran’s total cement production is – on average – about 90 million tonnes per year, with about 60 million tonnes of cement consumed domestically. The Tehran Times is reporting that cement production has increased by 12 per cent since the current government came to power in 2021.

Secretary of Iran’s Cement Industry Producers Association Ali Akbar Alvandian says cement production in Iran rose in the nine months to late November 2023, thanks to a better supply of electricity and fuels to manufacturers. He says this is good news, but the situation could further improve in the coming year.

There are 13 half-completed projects underway in the country which, when completed, could increase white cement production by more than 8.8 million metric tonnes.Alvandian says Iran was the fourth largest cement producer in the world some two decades ago when investment in the industry was at its highest. But he says the country has moved down to sixth place in the global ranking of cement producers and this must change.

About 250 miners demanding better wages entered the third day of an underground protest at the Bakunung Platinum Mine, according to the National Union of Mineworkers (NUM). "Workers want salary increases," NUM spokesman Livhuwani Mammburu told AFP, confirming the strike at the mine. Other complaints include unpaid maternity leave and the looming loss of hundreds of jobs at a time where the mine was advertising for senior roles, Mammburu said.
